Gran Turismo: Sport is Mostly Online-Only

In a move that is sure to anger plenty of people, Sony has made it's new Gran Turismo entry "Online- only" for the most part. The fact that Sony is doing it for the "most" part makes me wonder if Sony is trying to test the waters for reception and if the game succeeds and gets good reception from press and fans alike then it might make future entries full-on "Online only". I don't see them being successful without getting flak from the public at least initially. Now getting flak and getting bad sales and ROI out of its product as a result of the flak are 2 different things. A lot of people can voice dissent and still buy a product anyways as seen by EA's Star Wars Battlefront 1 which was a success given sale numbers despite the fact it was online only.

According to the PlayStation Blog, Sony has said " The reason regarding the technical implementation of it's Online Only component is to ensure game progress, Car availability and that driver ratings are properly maintained".

Given my 18 years of Gaming (mostly with consoles), A game developer doesn't need to store game progress online nor car availability especially on a console with a very strict anti cheat / piracy service and a closed-end OS that prevents tampering of both online and offline-based game data. If this game was on PC and it had a big focus on competition that could be edited for those of us that are tech-savvy then I could understand that but that's not the case at all here so this is an excuse for Sony to impose online only on gamers and a lousy one at that.
