FTC Announced Crackdown on Tech Support Scams

On May 12th, The FTC announced "Operation Tech Trap" that has been cracking down on so-called "Tech Support" scams that have drained customers dry out of millions. The scam's intent is simply to trick victims into buying software they didn't needed after giving the victim a urgent notification on their screen that they had a virus on their computer and they need to call a certain number to get it removed. The feds have already taken 29 law enforcement actions to help stop this grand conspiracy of fraud.

So far the FTC and state authorities have stopped 17 companies conducting this illegal business and charged 12 more involved in state cases in 4 states. Besides the states cases, Federal charges have been made against 2 major tech support centers and 7 other people, 2 of which have already been indicted.

The FTC also has been working alongside authorities in India to also crackdown on Tech Support Center scams based over there and it hopes to continue the effort.
