Intel Unveiled It's New Skylake X CPUs

Today Intel revealed a new product in it's lineup called the i9 7980XE. It's a 18-Core / 36 thread CPU made for the most demanding users that runs things like server farms or game servers to 4K gaming rigs although personally a CPU like this most likely would be overkill even for 4K.

To talk more about the platform that spearheads the release of the new Skylake X series CPUs, the new X299 platform has Intel's new Turbo Boost Max 3.0 technology on-chip and a re-balanced Smart Cache hierarchy with of course bigger core options from 12-18 core products compared to just X99's 6 to 10 Core CPUs. Naturally, These higher core combinations make for a bigger price point and most likely would be more expensive than X99's 10 core CPU that launched for $1,723 USD.

Intel also recommends a watercooler for these chips especially with the higher core counts due to the power intake that these chips take which is anywhere from 140 watts to 166 watts. Air Coolers won't dissipate the heat as good as liquid cooling for the power intake of these chips. The higher the TDP the chip requires, the better cooling solution you'll need for the chip, you probably also heard that AMD back with it's FX 9590's some years ago recommended a liquid cooler due to the fact that it required 220 watts of power not to mention the 4.7-5.0 core clock that these insane chips were capable of. Fast forward, 2 to 3 years later and we have chips that are approaching that type of frequency clocks that require considerably less power intake than that.

Okay so the price for the top-end Intel i9 7980XE is going to be a MSRP of $1,999 ($2,000 give or take) and that's for the 18-core. The other prices and specs for the other chips are mentioned in the image below. Intel didn't mention a shipping date for these chips which can be a disappointment for some however if Intel wants to compete it would be wise to choose a Summer release date around the same date AMD's Threadripper series of CPUs would release.
